Entrepreneurs > MA2 Process
Our general target is a formative-stage company with key IP assets,
business plan and a management team. We may occasionally fund
early-stage ideas that need proof-of-principle experiments, and would
consider royalties as well as equity to do so. We expect the seed
capital to be used to reach the first inflection point (generally a
proof of principle) which is then followed by the first institutional
round. Typical seed rounds range from $200-$750K.
When we make an investment, we go through the following process:
- In order for us to consider your company, YOU MUST
SUBMIT THE BUSINESS PLAN THROUGH OUR WEBSITE. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.
- After the plan is submitted, the screening Committee determines
whether to recommend the company as a presenter at an upcoming MA2
meeting. Selected companies are typically notified two weeks in advance
of the meeting. In case you know an MA2 member, it may be helpful to
reach out to that person first, as a knowledgeable member can help the
screening committee understand your company.
- Companies have 15 minutes to present (this is a strict limit,
please practice your presentation) 10 minutes for Q&A and then
leave while MA2 has a 10 minute internal discussion.
- At the end of our discussion, we ask the members if they are
interested in: investing; participating in a diligence committee
(typically 3-6 members); or being a deal lead. If we do not have
sufficient interest in all of these tasks, we pass on the company.
- We get back to each presenting company within a week with the
group's decision.
- If we convene a diligence committee, the company is given the
contact information of the members and is asked to schedule the first
meeting. At this meeting, basic questions raised by the members are
discussed with the company, and tasks are assigned. Diligence then
proceeds until the committee is ready to make a recommendation. There
is no typical time frame for this process. It can take 2-9 months.
- Once a decision is made, we inform our members. If we make a
positive recommendation, we also solicit our members' interest in
investing. At this time, the appointed deal lead works with the company
and MA2 leadership to put together the financing round. We do not need
to lead a deal, but we will not invest without a trusted and highly
capable deal lead.
